FEATURES- Opteron Dual Core Server Processor 275
64-bit, 2.2 GHz Dual Core Server Processor.
Each core has separate L1/L2 cache hierarchies, as well as the
integrated memory controller, HyperTransport technology, AMD
PowerNow! technology, or AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology.
Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors can be inserted into existing 940-
pin sockets that support 90nm products.
AMD64 processors were designed from the start to add a second core.
Port already existed on crossbar/SRI.
One die with 2 CPU cores, each core has its own 1MB L2 cache.
A BIOS update is all that is necessary to get a compatible system up
and running with dual-core processors.
The 2 CPU cores leverage the same memory and HyperTransport
technology resources available in single-core processors. * X86-64 Technology
The AMD x86-64 architecture is an AMD innovation that extends x86, the
industry's most widely supported instruction set, and is designed to
enable 64-bit computing while remaining compatible with the existing x86
software infrastructure and industry experience.
AMD's 64-bit strategy allows the latest in processor innovation to work
smoothly with the existing installed base of 32-bit applications and
operating systems, while establishing an installed base of systems that
are 64-bit capable.
AMD X86-64 Technology enables the industry to advance software
development on all fronts, with x86 compatibility, while providing the
capability of delivering 64-bit technology benefits. * AMD HyperTransport Technology
HyperTransport technology is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point
link designed to increase the communication speed between integrated
circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and
telecommunications equipment up to 48 times faster than some existing
technologies.
HyperTransport technology helps reduce the number of buses in a system,
which can reduce system bottlenecks and enable today's faster
microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end
multiprocessor systems.
HyperTransport technology is designed to:
- Provide significantly more bandwidth than current technologies.
- Use low-latency responses and low pin counts
- Maintain compatibility with legacy PC buses while being extensible to
new SNA (Systems Network Architecture) buses.
- Appear transparent to operating systems and offer little impact on
peripheral drivers. * Integrated DDR DRAM
As processor microarchitecture capabilities have advanced, one of the
greatest performance limitations has become the system architectures
ability to provide sufficient low-latency memory bandwidth to the
processor core. The AMD Athlon 64 processor and the AMD Opteron
processor directly addresses this bottleneck by integrating a DDR memory
controller into the processor, revolutionizing the way x86-based
processors access main memory. By running at the processor s core
frequency, an integrated memory controller greatly increases bandwidth
directly available to the processor at significantly reduced latencies.
The performance-enhancing effect is even more dramatic within an AMD
Opteron multiprocessing environment, because each additional processor
has its own memory controller thereby scaling over all memory bandwidth.
Features of Integrated DDR DRAM Memory Controller:
- Available memory bandwidth scales with the number of processors added.
- 128-bit wide integrated DDR DRAM memory controller capable of
supporting up to eight (8) registered DDR DIMMs per processor.
- Available memory bandwidth up to 5.3GB/s (with PC2700 memory) per
processor. www.amd.com
